Plant based diets help rheumatoid arthritis.

The story of Andy, an avid Tennis player is no different from any other people suffering from crippling rheumatoid arthritis, but for fact that today he has returned to elite-level fitness and enjoys playing his passion, tennis.
Two years back, Andy was in pretty good shape (healthy and fit). But things changed dramatically in his life. Even though he was working hard to keep himself fit, he could hardly play tennis and workout. He observed severe pain in his joints and back pain. He had never experienced a problem like this before. He had no clue what was going on in his body. He was eating a perfect athlete diet comprising of oatmeal, nuts, whey protein, chicken breast sandwich, smoothies with whey protein, salmon, whole wheat  bun , broccoli and potato. The kind of crippling pain he started suffering in his joints and back brought his activities to stand-still state. The pain got worse and unbearable forcing him to visit a doctor. He was instantly diagnosed with arthritis. Andy was shocked, he though now he would have to spend rest of his life in this crippled state. He searched online for answer and found plenty of scientific research and papers pointing to plant based nutrition and to avoid completely animal protein and animal based products for at least 30 days. His biggest worries were that he would lose all his muscle mass in these 30 days, but then he had no other option, he decided to keep himself on pure plant based nutrition. In the next 30 days his pain was gone and in another 30 days he was completely free from arthritis. The best part is that he still has the same lean body mass and weight that he had earlier.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, painful, inflammatory disease which affects joints and connective tissues. In the United States, it is the number one cause for disability. Rheumatoid arthritis is one of the most common forms of arthritis and is characterized by an autoimmune reaction affecting an individual’s joint. According to Arthritis Foundation, approximately 1.3 million people in the United States have Rheumatoid arthritis, which is sadly 1% of the nation’s adult population. It is caused by the immune system attacking the joint leading to an inflammatory response which leads to swelling, pain, and erosion of the joint. Eating animal products such as poultry, meat, cheese, whey protein etc encourages the development of inflammation in the body. Since these animals are raised in a very stressful condition, they develop this disease. The animals are then treated with antibiotics to treat the disease. The disease overtime becomes resistant to the antibiotic. Compounds found in animal products such as Neu5Gc is viewed as foreign substances by the human body and this triggers inflammatory responses in our bodies. NeuGc-type compounds are not found in plants. It is not even synthesized by microbes. The only source of Neu5Gc is the foods of animal origin. Since plants don’t contain Neu5Gc, switching to plant based diet should be the first line of therapy offered to the patients faced with this dreaded disease. Just like Andy, many athletes are adopting plant-based lifestyle and are experiencing improved health and superior athletic performance. With plant based diet, patients not only have a better chance of halting but also reversing the damage resulting from the Rheumatoid arthritis.

Does the Organic Fruits and Vegetables Really Helping Your Health?

Speak to the advocates of the organic farming and you will know that organic fruits and vegetables are almost always better than conventionally produced agricultural products that use pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers. Organic foods have higher level of nutrition and leave less of an environmental footprint. Organic foods are better for the environment and they even taste better. Organically produced fruits, vegetables and cereals contain more antioxidants, less pesticides residue, lower levels of toxic metal like cadmium compared to foods grown in conventional ways.

According to a recent study conducted by the researchers at the Newcastle University, organically produces fruits, vegetables, and cereals contain significantly higher concentration of nutrients like antioxidants when compared to conventionally grown crops. Moreover, it’s an obvious fact that organically produced crops will have lower levels of toxic, pesticides and metals. The research paper pointed out that organically produced fruits, vegetables and cereals have between 19 to 69 percent higher concentration of certain antioxidants than conventionally grown crops. Scores of scientific studies and clinical trials around dietary intervention and epidemiological studies have proved that these antioxidants and other plant based chemical compounds are linked to reduce risk of chronic disease including cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative diseases and certain type of cancers.

Studies on the conventional crops found that they are four time more likely to have pesticide residue than organic ones. On the other hand, research conducted on organically produce cereals, observed that they have significantly lower concentration of cadmium, a toxic heavy metal. So to sum it up, organically produced fruits, vegetables and cereals leads to increased intake of nutritionally desirable antioxidant and will prevent you from harmful exposure to toxic heavy metal.

However not all research seem to advocate the health benefits of organically produces crops over conventionally grown ones. For example a significant large study conducted by the Stanford researchers and published by the New York Times in 2012, found that organic foods on an average are – no more nutritious – than their conventional counterparts. Another study published in 2009 by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition also reached at similar conclusion and presented their verdict that there is no evidence of a difference in nutrients quality between organically grown and conventionally produced agricultural products.

But then there are counter studies that supports the concept of organic crops that they are better for health. Researchers at the Washington State University observed in their study in 2010, that organic strawberries contained more vitamin C than the conventional ones. There are also scores of scientific study that show that consuming pesticides could be harmful to health and that’s where the real difference lies. Conventional agricultural production involves generous use of potentially toxic pesticides and synthetic fertilizers where by organically produced fruits and vegetables are not deliberately exposed to toxic pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. However it still seems more research needs to be conducted to determine whether or not organic produce is really better for health or not.

According to the current nutritional researches, it has been identified that there are numerous health benefits of eating chocolates. There are probably some basic benefits and advantages of eating chocolates on a regular basis.

Chocolate is a favorite among people all over the world. Dark chocolate has been proven through studies that it is healthier for people than milk chocolate and white chocolate, which offer higher fat content and less health benefits to the consumer. This type of chocolate is also known as semi-sweet chocolate or bittersweet chocolate and has many benefits. One of the benefits of chocolate is that it is a good mood enhancer. Many people consume it when they are having a bad day. It contains serotonin which acts like an anti-depressant. It not only relaxes us, but also serves to make blood vessels more flexible to help the flow of blood throughout our bodies.

The most outstanding dark chocolate health benefit is that it has a nutrient that has been shown to curb cancer. The antioxidants found in the cacao are an important ingredient which helps fight the free radicals that lead to illnesses and heart disease in the body. Flavonoids fight the free radicals which can come from foods ingested and even the environment. The flavonoids that help protect the immune system are called Catechins and Epicatechins. The higher the cacao content the better it is for you. Another benefit is that in one ounce can give you a full daily supply of magnesium and iron.

Other health benefits from the antioxidants include less joint pain from the stiffness of arthritis, it is great to increase energy by the B vitamins you will get from it, too. Antioxidants found in dark chocolate have been known to help you sleep better and feel well-rested the next day. Yet another benefit is that it has been shown to lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

Eating dark chocolate is a benefit to diabetics who are limited on how much sugar they can take in. It contains the good cholesterol and fats which do not interfere with insulin production. It also is a low carbohydrate food, which is another plus for diabetics.

There are many health related reasons to eat this type of chocolate. Not only can it help your body be healthier and affect your mental state of mind, but it tastes great. If you are going to purchase and indulge in chocolate, dark chocolate is the best choice for most people because of all of the benefits it offers.

A Bit of History

Thousands of years ago, the Aztec Empire had used cocoa as part of the ingredients to make spicy bitter drinks for their special occasions. At the later centuries, cocoa beans were brought to Spain, which then spread across Europe. Only at the end of the 19th Century, milk was added to chocolate to eat as well as to drink. Chocolate was once a fashionable choice, meant for the noble, rich and famous but now, it is meant for everyone.

Health Benefits

There are several conducted studies revealed the abundant benefits one might gain simply by having a little bite of semi-sweet chocolate. To be considered as dark chocolate, a product ought to have at least sixty five % of cocoa content.

Why not dairy chocolate? A study shows that milk will interfere within the process of antioxidants absorption, so lower the chances to fight certain illness. the same goes to chocolate, that contains no flavonoids (solid cocoa), well-known to be vital as an antioxidants agent. The following are 3 main reasons why it is good to consume dark chocolate:

  1. Antioxidants
  • Compounds called phenolic phytochemicals, or flavonoids found in cocoa act to protect the body from free radicals and damage that can lead to ailments such as heart disease, strokes, diabetes, asthma and cancer (lung cancer, prostate cancer).
  • Procyanidins produce nitric oxide which helps to stabilize blood pressure, balance up hormones inside the body and also decreases blood clotting.
  • It also lowers cholesterol level by reducing LDL (bad cholesterol) oxidation and help increase HDL (good cholesterol) concentrations in the blood.
  1. Stimulants
  • Caffeine help eases the symptoms of pre-menstrual, boost spirits and increase energy.
  • Have low glycemic index which act to maintain blood glucose and insulin levels.
  • Theobromine is mildly diuretic (increases urine production), is a mild stimulant, and relaxes the smooth muscles of the bronchi in the lungs. (Note that this may be toxic or lethal to dogs and other domestic animals such as horses because these animals metabolize theobromine more slowly than humans).
  1. Antidepressant and Aphrodisiac
  • Phenyl ethylamines and serotonin in chocolate are hormones known to help boost positive emotions.
  • Endorphins help create a sensational and pleasure feelings.
  • It also helps improving the flow of blood to the key regions of the brain thus prevents fatigue and ageing effects besides help to lift spirit.

Good Fats vs. Bad Fat

Some of the fats in chocolate do not impact our cholesterol. The fats are 1/3 oleic acid, 1/3 stearic acid and 1/3 palmitic acid:

  • Oleic Acid is a healthy monounsaturated fat that is also found in olive oil.
  • Stearic Acid is a saturated fat but one which research is shows has a neutral effect on cholesterol.
  • Palmitic Acid is also a saturated fat, one which raises cholesterol and heart disease risk.

That means, only 1/3 of the fats is bad for us. The others react positively throughout our body.

Useful Tips

  • One bar of dark chocolate has around 400 calories. If we eat half a bar of chocolate a day, we must balance those 200 calories by eating less of something else. It is always good to substitute our snacks or sweets with good bar of dark chocolate in our daily intakes.
  • Chocolate is a complex food with over 300 compounds and chemicals in each bite. To really enjoy and appreciate chocolate, take the time to taste it.
  • Avoid anything with caramel, nougat or other fillings as they tend to add fats and sugar besides holding us from getting the benefits of dark chocolate. However, chocolate with nuts, flavorings and peels will do just fine.
  • It is better not to eat chocolate with milk as it will prevent the antioxidants absorption in our body, thus erase the utmost benefits of chocolate.

A Healthy Diet

Dark chocolate by far is one of the best additions for a healthy diet. It can be consumed in any form like cakes, pastries, and bars or even as beverages. However, the key for healthy diets always come in moderation. This means that dark chocolate should be eaten moderately and never too much as it can still be a high-calorie and high-fat food. Fresh fruits and vegetables should always be eaten regularly as they are still the best source of antioxidants, therefore, never substitute them.

New Dietary Guidelines Bring Back Whole Eggs

According to the latest dietary guidelines, whole eggs, fruits, and vegetables get a boost. Until recently, eggs were criticized for their high fat content. However, the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee has recently changed its recommendations. It seems that dietary fat doesn’t affect cholesterol levels. People who restrict total fat tend to consume more carbohydrates, which increases their risk of heart disease, stroke, high cholesterol, diabetes, and metabolic disorders. Thus, a high-fat diet is more beneficial for health compared to one based on carbs.

What Foods Can You Safely Eat?
Eggs are no longer the enemy. Saturated fat and cholesterol are safer than sugar. Moderate amounts of coffee and alcohol are fine too. The new dietary guidelines put emphasis on whole foods, claiming that dietary cholesterol can actually boost a person’s HDL, or good cholesterol. Researchers believe that a diet high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, eggs, and dairy in moderate amounts is the key to optimal health.
The latest dietary guidelines have confirmed what most people already knew. The main culprit behind heart disease is not dietary fat, but sugar. Scientists claim that a Mediterranean-style diet may help lower the risk of stroke and cardiovascular problems. For the first time in history, they recommend people to limit sugar to no more than 10 percent of their daily calories. The average U.S adult consumes up to 30 teaspoons of sugar daily. The maximum recommended amount is 12 teaspoons a day.

Eggs Are Back
Whole eggs are now being considered a nutritious, healthy food. Not only they are a great source of protein and heart-healthy fats, but also contain powerful antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. The cholesterol in eggs has little or no effect on blood cholesterol levels. The real threat to cardiovascular health are sugars and trans fats.
If you love eggs, include them in your daily menu. Serve them along with veggies, seafood, legumes, and lean meat. Turn to whole foods and limit sugar to improve your health and ward off diseases.
