Plant based diets help rheumatoid arthritis.

The story of Andy, an avid Tennis player is no different from any other people suffering from crippling rheumatoid arthritis, but for fact that today he has returned to elite-level fitness and enjoys playing his passion, tennis.
Two years back, Andy was in pretty good shape (healthy and fit). But things changed dramatically in his life. Even though he was working hard to keep himself fit, he could hardly play tennis and workout. He observed severe pain in his joints and back pain. He had never experienced a problem like this before. He had no clue what was going on in his body. He was eating a perfect athlete diet comprising of oatmeal, nuts, whey protein, chicken breast sandwich, smoothies with whey protein, salmon, whole wheat  bun , broccoli and potato. The kind of crippling pain he started suffering in his joints and back brought his activities to stand-still state. The pain got worse and unbearable forcing him to visit a doctor. He was instantly diagnosed with arthritis. Andy was shocked, he though now he would have to spend rest of his life in this crippled state. He searched online for answer and found plenty of scientific research and papers pointing to plant based nutrition and to avoid completely animal protein and animal based products for at least 30 days. His biggest worries were that he would lose all his muscle mass in these 30 days, but then he had no other option, he decided to keep himself on pure plant based nutrition. In the next 30 days his pain was gone and in another 30 days he was completely free from arthritis. The best part is that he still has the same lean body mass and weight that he had earlier.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, painful, inflammatory disease which affects joints and connective tissues. In the United States, it is the number one cause for disability. Rheumatoid arthritis is one of the most common forms of arthritis and is characterized by an autoimmune reaction affecting an individual’s joint. Does the Organic Fruits and Vegetables Really Helping Your Health?

However not all research seem to advocate the health benefits of organically produces crops over conventionally grown ones. For example a significant large study conducted by the Stanford researchers and published by the New York Times in 2012, found that organic foods on an average are – no more nutritious – than their conventional counterparts. Another study published in 2009 by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition also reached at similar conclusion and presented their verdict that there is no evidence of a difference in nutrients quality between organically grown and conventionally produced agricultural products.

But then there are counter studies that supports the concept of organic crops that they are better for health. Researchers at the Washington State University observed in their study in 2010, that organic strawberries contained more vitamin C than the conventional ones. There are also scores of scientific study that show that consuming pesticides could be harmful to health and that’s where the real difference lies. Conventional agricultural production involves generous use of potentially toxic pesticides and synthetic fertilizers where by organically produced fruits and vegetables are not deliberately exposed to toxic pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. However it still seems more research needs to be conducted to determine whether or not organic produce is really better for health or not.

New Dietary Guidelines Bring Back Whole Eggs

According to the latest dietary guidelines, whole eggs, fruits, and vegetables get a boost. Until recently, eggs were criticized for their high fat content. However, the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee has recently changed its recommendations. It seems that dietary fat doesn’t affect cholesterol levels. People who restrict total fat tend to consume more carbohydrates, which increases their risk of heart disease, stroke, high cholesterol, diabetes, and metabolic disorders. Thus, a high-fat diet is more beneficial for health compared to one based on carbs.

What Foods Can You Safely Eat?
Eggs are no longer the enemy. Saturated fat and cholesterol are safer than sugar. Moderate amounts of coffee and alcohol are fine too. The new dietary guidelines put emphasis on whole foods, claiming that dietary cholesterol can actually boost a person’s HDL, or good cholesterol. Researchers believe that a diet high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, eggs, and dairy in moderate amounts is the key to optimal health.
The latest dietary guidelines have confirmed what most people already knew. The main culprit behind heart disease is not dietary fat, but sugar. Scientists claim that a Mediterranean-style diet may help lower the risk of stroke and cardiovascular problems. For the first time in history, they recommend people to limit sugar to no more than 10 percent of their daily calories. The average U.S adult consumes up to 30 teaspoons of sugar daily. The maximum recommended amount is 12 teaspoons a day.

Eggs Are Back
Whole eggs are now being considered a nutritious, healthy food. Not only they are a great source of protein and heart-healthy fats, but also contain powerful antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. The cholesterol in eggs has little or no effect on blood cholesterol levels. The real threat to cardiovascular health are sugars and trans fats.
If you love eggs, include them in your daily menu. Serve them along with veggies, seafood, legumes, and lean meat. Turn to whole foods and limit sugar to improve your health and ward off diseases.
